Localizing Christopher Marlowe shares with Marlowe biographers the conviction that it is essential to enter into new research projects ofdiscovery in the archives, and that the author-centred approach throughhistorical materials is indispensable to understanding him and his literaryoutput. However, I neither intend nor am competent to write another fullbiography of Marlowe. It seems that the preferable approach, once we takeinto account the great array of major biographies already published, shouldnot be to conjure up another whole portrait of Marlowe by putting forwardsupposed ‘facts’ based upon a very few reliable documents, embellished bymany speculations. Rather it should be to offer new readings about thesefragmentary documents, whether reliable or legendary, as well as aboutMarlowe’s literary output, based on the locally and temporally specificcontexts of those documents, drawn with historical veracity. In other words,not to tell the ‘historical truth’ of Marlowe’s life, but rather to examine withhistorical truthfulness these surviving documents through which we can seethe important facets of his social experience; to reassemble Marlowe, evenif the reconstructed portrait is not a fully rounded one, solely by means ofthese fragments and their interpretations.

My aim, therefore, in Localizing Christopher Marlowe, is to placeMarlowe at the centre of my research and to reassess his individual andcollective experiences by using hitherto overlooked sources pertaining andperipheral to his life.
