The kinetics and mechanisms of (free)-radical polymerization of (macro)monomers in dispersed systems was the topic of Non-Conventional Polymer Dispersions, the IUPAC-sponsored microsymposium and 15th Bratislava International Conference held in Smolenice in June, 2001. Synthetic approaches using micro-, mini- and multi-emulsions and nanostructured media were items of particular interest. The preparation of polymer particles of a range of sizes (nm--mm) was discussed and the advanced design of particle structure was a recurring theme, with many types of specialty products and materials covered. A collection of the presentations have been prepared for publication in this volume Macromolecular Symposia.

Focusing on current developments in the radical polymerization in the micellar media and synthesis of novel (surface-active) polymer products, the volume contains 23 contributions written by an international group of scientists and researchers. The main topics covered include microemulsion, miniemulsion, and multiple emulsion polymerizations; association and polymerization behavior of amphiphilic macromonomers, graft copolymers, and macroinitiators in polar media; and novel and non-conventional polymer products and polymer dispersions, prepared by radical polymerization. Chapter titles for main lectures include hairy particles prepared by living radical graft-polymerization and the preparation of sterically stabilized polymer dispersions.
