This book brings together fifteen essays that were originally presented at two conferences that took place at Stanford University in 1998 and at the University of Bologna in 1999. The book is cross-disciplinary and examines the relationship between causes and probabilities from the perspective of economics, statistics, physics, and philosophy. From the viewpoint of philosophy, the nature of causation has emphasized questions relating to probabilistic causality, such as whether causal links are reducible to probabilities, and whether causes can be distinguished from spurious correlations. Beginning with the philosophical program of analyzing away causes by means of probabilities, the investigation of the relationship between causes and probabilities has been progressively enriched by non-reductionist perspectives. Functional debate has focused on accounts of causation in terms of physical processes; manipulative accounts that relate causation to the agent's perspective; and counterfactual analysis.
