The Lotus House has taken many years to come to fruition. My interest in WWII in South East Asia was originally inspired by researching my father’s wartime experience as a prisoner of the Japanese on the Thai-Burma Railway, which led to my first book Bamboo Heart: A Daughter’s Quest. As part of that research, I read about the war in the Philippines and the atrocities that took place there, including the Bataan Death March, and have wanted to write about it ever since.

I’d like to thank Lauren Finger, for her brilliant editorial input, and Hannah Thorogood for her painstaking proofreading. Thanks also to Rafa Andres at Cover Kitchen for the fabulous cover design. And thanks too to my friend, Talei Cadman, for travelling with me to the Philippines in 1988 where we discovered the history of Manila and the beauty of the islands first-hand.

The following were invaluable sources of inspiration and information:

Michael Norman and Elizabeth M.Norman Tears in the Darkness

Elizabeth M.Norman We Band of Angels

Brian MacArthur Surviving the Sword

Robert Lapham and Bernard Norling Lapham’s Raiders -Guerillas in the Philippines 1942-1945

Barbara Brooks Tomblin GI Nightingales

The New York Times - January 1st 1942.

Wikipedia -notably articles on WWII in the Philippines, The Bataan Death March, The Angels of Bataan, The Pensacola Convoy, The Attack on Pearl Harbor, The Philippine Resistance, and Margaret Utinsky (a nurse who was imprisoned in Manila by the Japanese for resistance activities).
