This book follows on from my Communicating: The Multiple Modes of Human Communication (2023), a companion volume rather than a sequel. It deals with the same themes of communication and expression but this time focuses on human activities, saying little about those of other animals. It is, essentially, about the tools that we human creatures develop and manipulate to express ourselves and interact meaningfully with each other.

It, thus, has a different perspective from the previous work. It has brought me to the same conclusion, that of querying a long-established tale of the early history of human communicating. Further, as well as attention to the familiar tools of the voice, the pen, and musical instruments such as the lyre, considered in comparative perspective, this book also brings in some new topics, in particular our often unawares communicative use of numbers and colors, a greater attention to music, and some thoughts on communication in the earliest era of human history.

As well as documentary sources, it builds on my own research and has turned out a more personal take on the subject than I had planned at the outset. I have cited examples from my own experience or observation – I prefer primary evidence to hearsay. I hope you can accept this intrusion of the personal.
