Politicians, European and Westminster have bars with cheaper
booze, smoking if you wish, pensions the private sector could only
dream of, tax concessions, and travel arrangements at which
ordinary folk can only wonder. It is not just elected politicians who
make up the political class. They can be sacked by the electorate
and vilified without mercy by the press, although the vilification
normally comes at the behest of other politicians. There is the
significantly more appalling neo-political class. The quango-crats and
fake charity bosses. I have been mercilessly lobbied by Christian Aid
on corporate tax. Obviously they are pushing a political agenda most
big charities now do. It is an intricate game of government self-
lobbying. (I was tempted to write self-abuse).The aim of this book is not an aide memoire on how the British are
governed, although my very able ex-colleague, Michael McManus,
has produced one in Appendix A. Most readers of this work will
already have a broad grasp of that. This is more the work of ‘agent
provocateur’. It is about why we are governed or certainly why we
are governed in the hopelessly inefficient, corrupt and incompetent
way we seem to be.One of the inspirers of this book was an airport car park attendant
at Leeds who recognised me and stopped for a chat. His main point
was simple, ‘Why don’t they leave us alone?’ An ordinary working
man had put his finger on the crux of libertarianism and I thank him.
Indeed, it could have been the title for this book.I chose ‘A Dinosaur’s Guide to Libertarianism’ because it has been
a favourite word in my consistent and systematic vilification.
Classical liberalism and libertarianism is the only possible salvation
for mankind; it looks to the future, not the past. For those interested,
I suggest they re-visit Hayek’s brilliant 1960 lecture entitled ‘Why I
am not a Conservative’. Or perhaps settle down on holiday with
Herbert Spencer’s ‘Conditions Essential to Human Happiness’.
