Martin Luther King Jr. is widely viewed as an American civil rights leader who applied principled and situational nonviolence in efforts to eradicate racism, poverty, and violence in the United States in the 1950s and 60s. It is too often forgotten that he was also a self-proclaimed "world citizen" with a global vision, and that he envisioned the advance of globalization long before most of his contemporaries. This book exposes the global King who united in spirit and practice with other world leaders and representatives of the World Council of Churches to promulgate enduring peace and human community. It brings us to a new appreciation of the global King and explains how he continues to inform our understanding of what it means to live and function in the "world house"

Review

This is a rich and groundbreaking study of a major religious leader in the Western world who challenged humanity around the need to employ peaceful means as an avenue to global community. Highlighting Martin Luther King Jr. and his associations with leaders in the World Council of Churches, this book adds immeasurably to our understanding of both King the devoted churchman and the global King. I recommend it highly. --Lewis V. Baldwin, Professor of Religious Studies, Vanderbilt University

This book is a welcome addition to the still evolving globalization genre in King studies, making it clear that King was, from beginning to end, concerned to eradicate racism and militarism not only in the US, but throughout the world. A LASTING PROPHETIC LEGACY is must reading for the serious student on King, but it will also appeal to a more general audience of readers. --Rufus Burrow Jr., author of ''Martin Luther King, Jr. for Armchair Theologians''

Thomas Mulhall provides us with an invigorating engagement of essential questions and conceptually refreshing horizons of how King should be understood in the twenty-first century. He places King in conversation with the ecumenical church and notes the importance of his commitment to world peace, especially his work to dismantle apartheid in South Africa. It promises to reorient the way King's life and thought are interpreted. A must-read for students of King's thought. --Noel Leo Erskine, author of ''King Among the Theologians''
