Almost 10 years have now elapsed since the publication of the first edition of this book, and I now deem it  necessary to produce the second edition that readers have in their hands. Indeed, spatial econometrics is a very dynamic discipline still very rapidly evolving and, even if I wanted to preserve the original introductory nature of this book, there were a number of new topics deserved at least a short mention. First of all, in this second edition I introduced the discussion related to a larger set of linear and non-linear models such as the spatial Durbin model and the spatial Tobit model. On a more substantial level, the book in its first edition was based exclusively on a modeling view, that at the time was considered the orthodoxy in the scientific landscape, and which considered the error term the only element of randomness in a model, with its parameters considered as fixed (although unknown) and with the weight matrix connecting the various spatial units exogenously given with no elements of uncertainty. Even if these views are still those that are prevalent in the literature nowadays, I thought that I had to include at least a mention to some heterodoxic alternative views that deny these paradigms and that are acquiring popularity in recent years.
