Molly Elliot Seawell (1860–1916) was an early American historian and writer, known for her literary contributions and notable family connections, including being a niece of President John Tyler. She grew up on a Virginia plantation with access to a vast library of classic literature, which greatly influenced her education. Despite not reading novels until age 17, she developed a deep love for English classics and poetry.

Her writing career began when she submitted stories to Lippincott's Monthly Magazine under a pseudonym, receiving encouragement from the editor, William S. Walsh. She eventually used her real name and gained recognition for her works, including "Maid Marian" (1886) and "Hale-Weston" (1889), which were widely read and translated into German.

Seawell wrote in three main genres: regional fiction, romances, and books for boys, with a strong focus on characterization rather than intricate plots. She authored around 40 books, including fiction, non-fiction, and political essays. She remains a significant figure in American literature and journalism, with her works offering insights into the values and attitudes of her era.
