This volume of the Akashic Noir series takes us to Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, a vibrant land of 110 million people, at least five languages, and a wide span of civilization from college-educated families to the poor in their whacks. Whatever you once thought of Ethiopia, the stories here probably turn your preconceived ideas on their heads.
This is a city of great contrasts, connected to a diaspora in the USA and London and haunted by a violent past not too long ago. There are families haunted by the disappearance of their loved ones and given hope of resolution when mass graves are discovered.
There are, moreover, ghosts that haunt and characters that see the world enveloped in many hues. There are the classic shape shifters of African legend and issues confronted. If you open this thinking you'll find an African Sam Spade, you'll be lost. Perhaps it's not really noir, but
more literary. In any event, the stories contained within are powerful and well worth reading.
