Originally Published 1982, this edition in this format published 2009.

After surviving an exploding mine laid by a U-Boat off the coast of Scotland in 1939 on board the RN Nelson Class Battleship HMS Nelson, the Author went onto briefly serve on board the much smaller destroyer HMS Douglas of the Admiralty Class. After leaving this destroyer while serving in the Mediterranean, he returned back to the far more prestigious 'Big Ship Navy' after being recalled to England. Shortly after a brief period of leave, the Author joined the still fitting out King George V Class Battleship HMS Prince of Wales and remained on board upto her loss in late 1941. During that service he witnessed several major events including 'The Battle of the Denmark Straits' and the loss of HMS Hood (May 1941), The Atlantic Charter Voyage to Newfoundland, Canada (August 1941), service in the Mediterranean and Convoy Escort Operations to Malta (September-October 1941).

Ordered to sail to reinforce 'Fortress Singapore' she arrived on 2 December without the expected Aircraft carrier which had been sailing independently and was delayed. A few days later the Japanese invaded Malaya, and HMS Prince of Wales was ordered to sea to locate and sink Japanese troopships known to be sailing off the coast. Instead HMS Prince of Wales was attacked by two waves of Japanese long rage bombers based in French Indochina and sunk with the loss of 327 of her officers and ratings. After being safely rescued by an RN Destroyer HMS Express, which was herself nearly dragged underwater by the capsizing HMS Prince Of Wales, the Author was put ashore in Singapore. His survival and escape from Singapore in 1942, saw him later returning to sea duty.
