'Postmodern animism' first emerged in grassroots Japan in the aftermath of mercury poisoning in Minamata and the nuclear meltdown in Fukushima. Taking a biographical approach, it illustrates how these individuals moved towards the conclusion that animism can help humanity survive modernity.
