The aim of this book is to rapidly advance students to the level where they can

solve systems of linear and nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) with

state-of-the-art finite difference and finite volume numerical methods: TRBDF2

(trapezoidal rule/backward difference formula second-order) for parabolic modes

like heat conduction or diffusion, modern iterative methods including PCG (preconditioned conjugate gradients) and GMRES (generalized minimal residuals) for

elliptic modes like electrostatics or potential flow in fluids, and WENO (weighted

essentially non-oscillatory [method]) for hyperbolic modes like advection or gas

dynamics. We also review state-of-the-art numerical methods for systems of linear

and nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs) including the explicit fourthorder Runge-Kutta method and the implicit TRBDF2 method.
