This study is based on recent theory that suggests that the Roman province of Egypt was not entirely peculiar, and should not be regarded separately from other provinces. It approaches the problem of the transition between Hellenistic kingdom and Roman province, looking in particular at the impact of this 'complex but increasingly familiar transaction' on Egypt's administrative and fiscal structure. The work looks at evidence from Egypt, but does not attempt to compare it to the evidence from other provinces, noting parallels rather than attempting to 'postulate derivations of Roman practice from Egypt or vice versa'. Capponi tries to examine piece by piece the evidence to formulate a theory on the impact of Roman rule, on an administrative, and then a social and economic level. The evidence taken into account is largely derived from papyri, ostraca and inscriptions, but relevant literary sources have also been included. Chapters cover subjects including the institutional changes, administration in judicial terms, changes in relationship between central government and the municipal offices, and impacts on social structure, including classification and status.
