Barnaby Rudge: A Tale of the Riots of Eighty, commonly known as Barnaby Rudge, is a historical novel by writer Charles Dickens. It is set in the anti-Catholic riots in England in the year 1780. It was the first attempt by its author to practice the historical novel; He only published another novel of that type: A Tale of Two Cities.
Barnaby Rudge is the result of Dickens' interest in mob violence and his reflections on property and religious fanaticism.
The story begins at the Maypole Inn where owner John Willet and his three cronies are gathered. There, one of them narrates a widely known local story about the murder of Reuben Haredale, which occurred more than 20 years ago on that same day. Reuben was the owner of a local farm that was now owned by his brother and niece. The gardener and the butler disappeared after the crime, so both were suspected, but later the butler was found dead and it was deduced that the gardener had been the murderer.
Characters are the essence of Dickens, and one of the standouts in this novel is the locksmith's apprentice, Sim Tappertit, a little man who was convinced that he was of magnificent stature, possessed of extraordinary talent and remarkable attractiveness to ladies, and of being Destined to do great things in life.
