Tracey Rowland profiles the Christian Humanist ideas of six Catholic scholars who were based in Munich during the first half of the 20th century. They were all interested in defending and presenting a Christian Humanism in the aftermath of German Idealism and the anti-Christian humanism of Friedrich Nietzsche. They were seeking to offer hope to Christians during the darkest years of the Nazi regime and the post-World War II era of shame, guilt and reconstruction.
Carl Muth was a public intellectual and founder of the journal Hochland that was published from 1903-1972 except for a few years when it was closed down by the Nazis. Theodor Haecker was also a public intellectual, translator and mentor of the student leaders of the White Rose resistance movement. Theodor Steinbüchel was a professor of moral theology who incorporated personalist philosophy into his studies. Gottlieb Söhngen was a professor of fundamental theology who supervised the doctoral thesis of a young Joseph Ratzinger. Romano Guardini was the leader of the German Catholic youth movement called ‘Quickborn’ and the holder of the Chair of Christian Weltanschauung at the University of Munich and Erich Przywara was a Jesuit theologian who taught both Karl Rahner and Hans Urs von Balthasar among many other major names in 20th century German theology.
