68 reviewspacked with the documents of her lifetime, her school records, identity cards, notebooks, personal
letters, drawings, and official correspondence. Of particular interest was her wartime
correspondence with her Jewish parents and other relatives. There was a folder containing Red
Cross messages traded between England where she was safe and Germany where her loved ones
were not. The messages were limited to 25 words and restricted in subject matter, but they
conveyed volumes.
The suitcase also held a separate binder I had seen before, containing Mary’s own typed
manuscript about her complex and unconventional life. I remember her telling me with an ironic
smile, “You should do something with my crazy story, maybe even make a movie out of it.”
Despite all her mock self-deprecation in making this request, she hoped I would eventually fulfill
my mitzvah to preserve her memory and honor her parents by telling her story and that of her
family. It has taken me years in fits and starts to pull together my mother’s complex saga in
Germany, England, and the United States.
