The undying popularity of Sherlock Holmes and Hercule Poirot vouch for that fact. In the early thirties, a detective by the name of Byomkesh Bakshi made an unobtrusive entry into the world of Bengali fiction. He preferred calling himself a Satyanweshi, a seeker of truth, and within days was a household name, courtesy his cerebral skills and the exciting situations he found himseft in.

In the tradition of Doyle and Christie, Byomkesh is accompanied on his adventures by his friend, Ajit, Slightly obtuse and the perfect foil to him.

Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay  was a well-known literary figure of Bengal. He was also actively involved with Bengali cinema as well as Bollywood. His most famous creation is the fictional detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

He wrote different forms of prose: novels, short stories, plays and screenplays. However, his forte was short stories and novels. He wrote historical fiction like Kaler Mandira, GourMollar (initially named as Mouri Nodir Teere), Tumi Sandhyar Megh, Tungabhadrar Teere (all novels), Chuya-Chandan, Maru O Sangha (later made into a Hindi film named Trishangni) and stories of the unnatural with the recurring character Baroda. 

Monimala Dhar was born in Shillong and spent a major part of her school days there. Her late father A.M. Dam, an administrative officer of repute, encouraged and nurtured her love for Bengali literature. She has had a long academic career, serving as a teacher, a vice principal, a principal and a chief administrative officer post retirement, at institutions of repute. A ‘compulsive’ translator, she intends to make Bengali literature available to those who cannot access it in its original language. Her first volume of Byomkesh Bakshi stories came out in 2003. She has also translated Saradindu’s reincarnation stories called When the Earth Was Young and Abanindranath Tagore’s Rajkahini. This is Monimala’s fourth translated work.
