"Set against this backdrop, Nirupama Borgohain's "Celebration" (titled "Utsav" in Assamese) is a reminder of such a crucial moment's impact on the everyday lives of the people. At the centre of the story is its protagonist Kuhila Bai, a fishmonger who somehow made her ends meet by selling small varieties of fish. The circumstances under which Kuhila Bai took to selling fish for her livelihood are connected to the unexpected fallout of bloodshed, of which her young son was a victim. Kuhila's husband was a fishmonger and his expertise ensured that none in the family felt the want of any kind. Those days of prosperity saw the large family in a secure domestic environment which did not require Kuhila to venture out for fulfilling any need. When her husband passed away, her children weren't in a position to carry forward the professional activity of their father. This compelled Kuhila to take to fishmongering, but she could only deal with small fish, and this change considerably affected the economic situation of the family. Her income dwindled and she found the going difficult, more so because she had to manage both the professional and the domestic fronts on her own. When her son was mature enough to find his ropes as a fishmonger, Kuhila's professional responsibilities eased a little, but not for long."
