“In a new dawn’s light, I counted forty marks scratched into the mast by my
beloved Atamoda. Seventy-four survivors wandered the decks. We knelt
powerless before the mighty sea. The tempest stripped us of everything, and left
us drifting on a salty sea upon two waterlogged wedding barges, our new arun-
ki, without food or water. Yet, even through grief and hunger and despair, the
sun brought hope. Below Atamoda’s forty marks, our new Isp made the forty-
first cut.
“The Scythian’s blade sliced deep.
“In answer to our prayers, the seas remained calm. Ghalen found a few
crooked hardwood sticks drifting near the barge. By the forty-third day, Levidi
had carved them into useable spears. On the forty-seventh day, the Nameless
God sent many fish from the deep, the likes we had never seen before. Strong
beasts, yet not too strong for a Lo spear, no matter how crooked. When our
thirst became almost unbearable, the rains returned. This time, they were gentle
and mercifully short. Most delightful of all were the sea dogs that arrived on
Day fifty-six from seemingly nowhere. Even after we slew several for their
meat, bladders, and hides, the creatures still appeared from time to time,
showing almost no fear and frolicking around the barges.
