Он был изначально создан для армии США под патрон .45 Long Colt, но впервые принят вооруженными силами, морской пехотой и флотом Соединенных Штатов только в 1909 году под обозначением Model 1909. Во время Первой мировой войны по причине нехватки пистолетов Colt M1911 модель 1909 года приспособили под пистолетные патроны .45 ACP и приняли на вооружение под обозначением Model 1917. Для снаряжения барабана патронами с гильзами без фланца использовались пластинчатые обоймы.
