As we observed in the preface to the first edition of this book, the subject of thermodynamics plays at least some role in almost every other discipline of science, from molecules and the nano-scale to the cosmos and astrophysics, with biology and the life sciences not excepted. Some aspects of thermodynamics underpin the very fundamentals of these subjects while it has an impact on almost every application in engineering. It follows that the subject features in a wide range of undergraduate courses in some form or other and also in disparate research activities. For these reasons, the task facing authors of books on thermodynamics is what approach to adopt: whether to be axiomatic or not; whether to consider fundamentals or applications; which topics to select for detailed treatment and which to omit. These choices also faced the authors of the current volume, but the concept and format of texts entitled Commonly Asked Questions in … does at least provide a different rationale for the selection of material.
Accordingly, our selection of topics has been guided in part by our own experience and, as was the choice in the first edition, by questions posed by those we have taught or by colleagues from other disciplines who have sought advice. However, in this edition, we also wanted to recognize that questions arise in the minds of the public and governments in the twenty-first century to which thermodynamics can provide interesting partial answers. The most pressing of these questions now arise with respect to the steps that should be taken to
mitigate climate change. Specifically, because thermodynamics is predominantly concerned with energy, its conservation, conversion and exploitation, we address the choices that face us about energy generation, storage and utilization as well as the environment.
