Ah . . . a generational difference at its finest! To David, a Gen Xer, it makes all the sense in the world to have a linear setup that prepares the reader for what they are about to dive in to. However, to Jonah, a Gen Z’er, he’s used to all of his media and entertainment being streamlined, or to having the ability to fast forward through a commercial. So naturally, anything other than starting with chapter 1 feels like a waste. Maybe ask a Millennial and the conversation could be all about whether or not the book comes in an eversion. Ask a Boomer and, who knows, the conversation could be all about the author’s credentials.
