The forest breathed in. Green, umber, brown. Hard black branches,
leaves soft as skin. Sunlight cascaded through the canopy, speckling the
dead leaves below, dappling the carpet of decay.“They say this forest is haunted,” said the man in a cheerful way. He was
slightly out of breath from the exertion of the walk, and his cheeks were
lightly smudged. The woman pulled her thin cardigan tighter, adjusting her scarf against the
unexpected chill in the air. She smiled at him, her eyes alight, teasing.
“You don’t believe in ghosts, do you?”The man shrugged, palms facing the hidden sky. It was a receptive gesture;
he was open to the idea. He was open to most things. It was one of the
reasons the woman was in love with him. She took his hand and loosely
linked his fingers with hers as they made their way past the tree trunks
covered with lichen and moss. Such beautiful patterns, she thought. Such
delicate shades of blue and teal. Lichen should be the name of a paint color. Of
course, she knew it would be impossible, because lichen came in all
shades, including gold. She had seen it on river rocks and dead oak stumps.
Liquid Amber was the name of the trees that surrounded them. How
wonderful that sounded, how rich and royal, something out of a fairytale.
As they wended their way through, the couple could hear the beat of birds’
wings, and the busy work of beetles. They could feel the spring of humus
underfoot. The woman stopped to swat at a mosquito needling her calf. She had an
irrational hatred of mosquitoes, and was perversely pleased when she
looked at her palm, freshly dabbed with the flattened remnants of the
delicate pest and a small smear of crimson blood. She rubbed her hands
together. “Is it much farther?”The weather had been beautiful before entering the woodland—a bright
clear sky full of promise—but once the trees outnumbered them, the
ceiling of branches and leaves kept that happy brightness out.
“We’re almost there,” the man replied, giving her an encouraging look.
