60 reviewsAt the outset, I would like to make it clear that this book is, in the main, a small-scale pioneer approach to the sociology of dance, rather than an attempt to establish, on a grand scale, a truly comprehensive social theory of dance in all its aspects. In the first place, one particular category – ‘social dance’ (or dancing for pleasure and recreation) – has been singled out from a wide spectrum which includes many other important aspects, such as ballet, stage, national, folk, primitive, sacred, and dance in ancient civilizations. In the second place, the main study is scaled down to one particular country (England) and a specific period of history (from the Middle Ages to the present day). Social dance has been singled out because of its very close link with changes in society, and the further limitation in terms of time and place is in order to make possible a detailed and comprehensive sociological investigation.
Other writers may well be able to enlarge the scale by specialist contributions relating to other countries and to other aspects of dance.
