150 years ago, on 24 November 1859 to be precise, Darwin introduced a new paradigm of natural history with the publication of The Origin of Species. As epistemology has already established, the Darwinian theory of descent with modifications or the theory of natural selection took about 20 years to be constructed, that is, between 1837 and 1859, roughly speaking. The 150-year history of Darwinism and evolution demonstrates the fruitfulness of the theory of natural selection, both in the life and human sciences and in the field of culture. As in almost the entire world, in Portugal Darwin's reception began in the 1960s, presenting surprising new developments, given the Portuguese scale. In 2009, the History and Sociology of Science Group of the Centre for Interdisciplinary Studies of the 20th Century of the University of Coimbra organised the International Meeting "Darwin, Darwinisms, Evolution (1859-2009)". This scientific meeting aimed to be a space for discussion open to all those interested in this topic, both nationally and internationally. The texts now published constitute a collection of many expanded texts that served as the basis for the papers presented.
