Days ofBlue Loyalty is a study of the membership of Fine Gael. No member of that party will need to be told what the title alludes to, but for those for whom the significance of the phrase is opaque, we should explain that since 1933 the colour blue has been associated, initially rather controversially, with Fine Gael. The core of the book consists of analysis of a survey of the party's membership that we conducted in the autumn of 1999, when we posted questionnaires to arormd 3,600 members of the party. Pessimists told us that we would be lucky to receive 500 replies, but they had imder-estimated the helpfulness of Fine Gael members, for we eventually attained a response rate of about 50 per cent.
