Fragility curves (also known as vulnerability curves) are known to be instrumental in the decision making for the retrofitting of structures. Nonlinear static analysis, specifically, pushover analysis, combined with nonlinear dynamic analysis, that is, time history analysis, were utilized to determine ductility factors. In turn, these factors are used to calculate damage indices and damage ranks.

This book is part of the author's journey in dealing with the country's battle with the wrath of destructive earthquakes happened during his lifetime.  His adventure was inspired by a scene from a television news, showing a hand of a student holding a ballpen, while inside a ruined school building after that catastrophic July 16, 1990 earthquake in Nueva Ecija province.  He promised to himself that in the future, he will be a responsible engineer who will design structures that will not endanger the lives of the people, especially the hope of our world, the youth.
