Note from L J Dix: A note about the cat in this book: Laroi is the first cat in this

series that isn’t based on a real cat from my own life. Even

Cosmo, although not a real cat, got her personality and name

from a cat of daughter’s. All the other cats in this series have

been based on cats I actually lived with and loved. I’ll be

adding (or rather, expanding on) another well-loved “real” cat

in the next book in the series.

One fun thing I’ve been able to do as a writer is add some of

my own experiences into these books. The explanation about

why Anwyn began practicing escrima forms bare-handed is

based on my own unfortunate experience. In 2012, preparing a

weapons form for national competition, I wanted to practice

daily at home, as well as a few times a week at my

taekwondo school. It was a particularly rainy spring in Western

Washington, so I didn’t get much outdoor practice. And my

house didn’t have much clear space.

I practiced in my kitchen, and just like Anwyn, I put out a

light fixture with one of my escrima. That’s when I began

practicing bare handed, doing the moves as if I held an

escrima. The memory came up when Anwyn began working

out in her cell, so I added it to the story. (Note: I took first

place in that competition).

Anwyn has more adventures coming. She’s made a decision,

but there will be challenges ahead for her, the team, and all

her many other friends. Plus, we’ll finally get to meet those

pesky folks from the Hrithain Empire, and they’re not all what

Anwyn expects. Look forward to some big changes coming in

Mercenary’s Apprentice.
