Instead, this book emphasizes and elevates what she calls “the values identified with 21st- century teaching: cooperation, communication (dialog), and creativity” (2013, p. 12). Noddings reorients the discussion about schools towards the development of a miniature community; through this lens, Dewey offers a still-relevant structure for evaluating whether students going through schools are learning the values necessary for democratic citizenship. Noddings simultaneously uses the idea of interconnection to frame a critique of the discipline-specific emphasis of curriculum and secondary education. Her interest in democratic groups, then, leads to an exploration of interdisciplinary models of learning and how the expansion of what is worthy for curriculum could offer an alternative to traditional schooling.
