The meaning of TQM sustainablity. The concept of sustainable development has been touted as a new planningagenda (Beatley and Manning, 1998). As such, it becomes a fundamentalconcept which should be an important aspect of all further policy developments(Loffler, 1998). Sustainable development is based on a perceived need toaddress environmental deterioration and to maintain the vital functions ofnatural systems for the well being of present and future generations. Zairi andLiburd (2001) define sustainability as ‘‘the ability of an organization to adapt tochange in the business environment to capture contemporary best practicemethods and to achieve and maintain superior competitive performance’’. Thisconcept implies that sustainability is a means for an organization to maintainits competitiveness. Quinn (2000) has similar ideas on sustainability:‘‘development that meets the present without compromising the ability offuture generations to meet their own need’’. Gladwin et al. (1995) define it as‘‘development, which meets the needs of the present, without compromising theability of future organizations to meet their own needs’’. Garvare and Isaksson (2001, p. 12) define sustainable development as ‘‘theprocess to reach a steady state where both humanity and nature thrive’’. Tosucceed with this, a global management process for sustainable development isneeded and management processes are needed on the personal, organizationaland societal levels. The reasons for pursuing sustainability are: morality;intergenerational equity; survival; and organizational benefits and risks.Sustainability is crucial to company performance. The organizational goaldescribes where the organization is headed based upon the businessenvironment and consistent with the corporate vision. Mission statements areused by individual sub-business units (e.g. distribution centres, manufacturingsites, specific operations or modules, etc.) to articulate how they contribute tothe business unit’s vision. A mission statement defines the purpose of abusiness unit. Value statements are time-independent principles that articulatehow individuals in the organization are expected to behave as they pursue thevision and mission. Value statements can especially make an impact when thevalue represents changes in behaviour required for the organization to achieveits vision and deliver its mission. Measuring performance through assessmentof the organization’s vision and mission statements is the foundation of asustainable effective performance measurement system (Hacker andBrotherton, 1998).
