66 reviewsHe worked his way successfully through naval college and eventually volunteered for duty in U-Boats.
During this period the underwater service was causing havoc to Allied shipping in the Atlantic and was highly regarded as an elite force. He had an exemplary service record, and eventually he gained his own command as part of 2 U-Flotilla.
Before his second operational voyage as Captain three new junior officers joined the U-Boat, they were confirmed Nazi 'die hards' and not popular aboard as a result. All three were poor watch keeping officers and 'blowhards' who were constantly praising the unstoppable Reich and its leadership. They refused to concede what many in the Kriegsmarine already had accepted as now being inevitable by early 1944; that they were loosing the 'U-Boat Krieg' and that it was because of Allied superiority in weapons, tactics and electronic aids which were now in use by Allied aircraft and warships.
This second voyage was to prove unsuccessful in terms of Allied ships sunk, and unbeknown to Kusch, the three hatched a plan to dishonour their Captain by accusing him of treason and cowardice.
The trial that resulted was corrupt and rigged from the start to finish.
No latitude was given from higher authorities and no account of his previous unblemished career was ever taken into consideration.
To the amazement of the court and those onlookers allowed to be present, the court President ordered that Kusch was to be shot by firing squad.
In May 1944 the sentence was carried out.
A true story of betrayal and murder within the German navy and of the failure of the military court system in use at that time.
