Readers who took the demented and disturbing trip through Hospital may
have arrived at Exorcism in search of closure, explanations, answers. But
Han Song’s dark, twisted fictional world is a land of many questions and
few answers. As each layer of the onion is peeled away, we do not get
closer to the core but instead drift even further in an Escher-like labyrinth

Peace Ark. The massive vessel—14,200 tons, 583 feet long—is
adorned with several large red crosses that identify it as a medical ship, and
it is equipped with eight operating theaters that can perform up to 40 major
surgeries a day. It has a further 20 intensive care unit beds,
and 300 regular hospital beds . . . Peace Ark also has
extensive diagnostic and examination facilities, with an X-
ray room, an ultrasound room, and a C-T scanner. There is
an examination room used for examining clinical specimens.
The ship has a gynecological examination room,…
