A horror story becomes even more unsettling when its protagonists are at their most vulnerable—as youth, as migrants, as working-class people. Such is the journey for Alvaro and Carmen, a Colombian brother & sister duo who escape their troubled homeland, seeking safety & a fresh start in America. But like many others who arrive with big dreams & small pockets, that transition from their former life to the new one is fraught with obstacles & setbacks. Instead of pursuing the dream, they find themselves persecuted by a nightmare.

For Martinez, that nightmare is not figurative—not exactly. And that’s how Extended Stay distinguishes itself from the many other narratives about migrants who receive an unkind welcome from a capitalist society that further disenfranchises the poor. Alvaro & Carmen’s limbo is the Alicia, a Las Vegas hotel that will not let them leave.

Why the Alicia becomes such a prison for the siblings is a mystery. Though the hotel is unquestionably otherworldly, readers will wonder about the dark energy that Alvaro—who witnessed the massacre of most of his immediate family—brought with him. He is tormented by the event, racked by survivor’s guilt, & in exile. All that emotional baggage was bound to manifest itself somehow, so why not in the Alicia, “the sort of place where you could forget yourself”?

If the Alicia is the ideal building for a haunting, then Alvaro makes a most appealing ghost, embodying the way society makes phantoms of the unwanted & the undesirable. In the American context, this includes low-wage & undocumented workers. When Alvaro & the other employees of the hotel become distressed, they have little recourse, & no path to rescue, intensifying their senses of loneliness & dislocation. So when Alvaro is struck by a moment of clarity & muses, “Where you are, what this place is, there is something here that is hungry & wrong. This is not home,” his statement applies not only
