Probabilistic reasoning has become a main tool in several branches of physics and
in many ways has a role today akin to analysis in the development of classical
physics. Probability theory until a few decades ago was not part of the mathematical
curriculum of a physicist: as a consequence there was a lack of introductory books in
this discipline with applications in physics. One must also consider that probability
reached a mature mathematical formulation and status only in the third decade of
the twentieth century with the work of the famous Russian mathematician A. N.
Kolmogorov.
In classical physics the only sector which made explicit reference to probability
was statistical mechanics once the atomic structure of matter was established and
accepted. However it was a “probability” created by physicists and largely based
on kinetic theory, until the appearance of the book “Mathematical Foundations of
Statistical Mechanics” by another well known Russian mathematician A. I. Khinchin.
The book appeared in English in 1949. We quote from this book which contains also
a brief historical sketch:
“In the books on physics the formulation of the fundamental notions of the theory
of probability as a rule is several decades behind the present scientific level, and
the analytic apparatus of the theory of probability, mainly its limit theorems, which
could be used to establish rigorously the formulas of statistical mechanics without
any complicated special machinery, is completely ignored.”
