There has always been a great mismatch between the burden of congenital heart disease and
the quantum of pediatric cardiac services available in our country. A lot of effort and finances
are being put to bridge the gap. Diagnosing congenital heart diseases prior to birth may help
in some ways supporting this effort by reducing morbidity and reducing the incidence of
congenital heart disease. This book was conceived with an idea to enable the current and the
future generation to suspect an abnormal heart in antenatal period and help in the management
thereafter.
I sincerely hope that this book will fill the lacunae for the need for a standard book onfetal echocardiography in India. This book is meant for trainees and practitioners in the field
of pediatric cardiology, radiology, obstetrics, fetal medicine, and sonography. A “Practical
approach” has been taken while writing the Chapters. It covers the entire spectrum from “basics”
to “diagnosis of abnormals”. We have included lots of figures to ensure that the concept is well
understood. Key points—learning messages have been provided with the Chapters along with
suggested reading at the end of each chapter, in case the reader is keen on more information. I
have tried to minimize any overlap and keep consistency amongst Chapters.
It would be advisable to go systematically from the first chapter, for beginners. However, itcan be used as a reference guide as and when needed in the echocardiography room. I hope
this book comes handy to understand the subject and also serve as a guide to management
