60 reviewsThis new reissue of an older history examines the reality behind the myths and Airmanship of some of the most famous of the Luftwaffe's Daylight Jagdgeschwader 'Experten' (Fighter Aces in Allied terminology), explaining amongst other things why only such a small minority of Axis pilots - those in whom the need to fly overrode almost anything else including self preservation and common sense - would in their operational careers go onto account for so large a proportion of the overall Luftwaffe victories achieved after its formation in March 1935 and in some cases continue to serve with the West German Luftwaffe during the Cold War. The Author concentrates in particular on the above average skills needed to survive as a fighter pilot in general as well as some of the others more specific to the Luftwaffe alone. Things like having a natural and all consuming love of flying and an above average aptitude for navigation, mathematics, physical strength, eyesight, internal fortitude and marksmanship are all examined along with the sometimes abnormally long operational tours that were expected of most Luftwaffe Aircrew in general. Each aircraft type operated by these Experten are also examined in detail and compared to their Allied equivalent in regards to operational performance and durability. Each of the chosen pilots accounts are backed by interesting and rare archival photographs with details that include their service in the West German Luftwaffe and are all supported by a text drawn from the experiences of these Airmen through the use of interviews with the Author and lengthy archival research throughout Germany and elsewhere. Those covered are: Adolf Josef Ferdinand 'Dolf' Galland (1912-1996), Werner 'Vatti' Mölders (1913-1941), Günther Rall (1918-2009), Erich Alfred 'Bubi' Hartmann (1922-1993), Johannes 'Macky' Steinhoff (1913-1994) and Hans-Joachim 'Jochen' Marseille (1919-1942).
