Hungarian-born Eugene Fodor (1905–91) began his travel career as an interpreter on a French cruise ship. The experience inspired him to write On the Continent (1936), the first guidebook to receive annual updates and discuss a country’s way of life as well as its sights. Fodor later joined the U.S. Army and worked for the OSS in World War II. After the war, he kept up his intelligence work while expanding his guidebook series. During the Cold War, many guides were written by fellow agents who understood the value of insider information. Today’s guides continue Fodor’s legacy by providing travelers with timely coverage, insider tips, and cultural context.

Native Californian Cheryl Crabtree, who updated the Monterey Bay Area, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, and Yosemite National Park chapters, has contributed to Fodor’s California since 2003 and also contributes regularly to the Fodor’s Oahu, Kauai, and National Parks guides. Cheryl is editor of Montecito Magazine and co-author of The California Directory of Fine Wineries hardcover book series (Napa-Sonoma and Central Coast editions). Her articles have appeared in many regional and national magazines, and she has also authored travel apps for mobile devices and content for travel websites.

Marlise Kast-Myers (w www.marlisekast.com) has traveled to more than 80 countries; lived in Switzerland, Dominican Republic, Spain, and Costa Rica; co-authored more than 40 Fodor’s guides; and written a memoir,Tabloid Prodigy. She also completed a surfing and snowboarding expedition across the world and has served as a photojournalist for Surf Guide to Costa Rica. She currently lives in San Diego County at the historic Betty Crocker Estate, where she and her husband, Benjamin, operate an antiques business, Brick n Barn, and where she writes travel features for the San Diego Union-Tribune. For this edition of Northern California, Marlise updated the Eastern Sierra chapter.
