This is a vey funny, lightweight mystery in which the body of
actress Jane Latour is found in the family home by her niece, the
incredibly naïve Jenny. Fearful of being accused of murder, Jenny goes
on the run, aided and abetted by her faithful friend. I did not find the
first few chapters enthralling, but once I began to see the jokes (yes,
it took a while) and to be drawn in, I enjoyed it thoroughly. There was
a chuckle or even a laugh-out-loud moment on most pages. Jenny's
innocence at the age of eighteen is incredible today, and possibly was
not too likely then, but it is very charming and the source of much of
the humour. There is a delightful romance with a hero whose humour is
not unlike Milne's own. The heavy-handed policemen, the peasantly
servants and the flavour of life in the early part of the twentieth
century are all thoroughly enjoyable and I ended the book feeling that,
even if life has never been like this, it ought to be. An altogether
more innocent world, quite reminiscent in some ways of the atmosphere of
the Winnie the Pooh books, yet with quite adult allusions and a wry
insight into human frailties, combine to make this a memorable - if
lightweight - book.
