As the editors, we are proud to introduce this book to all surgical residents and medical students interested in a career as a surgeon. We, as surgeons of various specialties, have struggled through the many years of intensive work hours, administrative duties, and clinical expectations to complete a surgical residency. We relied on mentors, colleagues, and many trial-by-fire experiences to survive. We acknowledge that it was not the best way to learn. It is even more of a challenge for trainees today.
This book is founded on many conversations with general surgery residents during these past 2 years. We aim to utilize the experiences of current residents at several residency programs, covering a wide variety of topics, with variable experiences based on differing ages, races, sexes, and marital statuses. We hope that it serves as a guide and resource to help residents and medical students prepare for the rigors of surgical residency. Information contained would hopefully help residents and students to not only survive but also thrive. We hope that this book will serve to fill the void in resiliency training.
Although many commercial products, tools, and programs are mentioned in the chapters, we have received no financial agreements or funds for the publication of this book.
Best of luck to all of you in your future surgical careers!
