This play is the result of a layered collaboration between us and our
historical, larger-than-life subjects Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.
Through our long, deep dive into research and creation, we fell under
the spell of these two wonderful, eccentric and transgressive women.
Gertrude and Alice came to provide a powerful inspiration for us:
challenging us to articulate the meaning(s) of their lives in the context of
our own lived experience as contemporary female artists.
An influential literary couple, Gertrude and Alice initially became
known for their weekly artist salons at their home in Paris in the 1920s.
They were friends of notable modernist painters like Pablo Picasso and
Henri Matisse, collecting their art and supporting them early in their
careers. Gertrude Stein was a prolific writer. Now credited as one of the
major figures of the modernist movement, she was a woman of enormous
and unflagging ambition on a quest for literary reinvention. She sought
to break down the English language and its conventions and to invent a
more accurate and visceral expression for the twentieth century,
unobstructed by punctuation or grammatical syntax. In her own lifetime,
much of Stein’s literary work was the object of ridicule; in fact, until her
bestselling book The Autobiography of Alice B. Toklas (published in 1933
when Stein was fifty-nine years old), she received very little positive
critical attention for her writing. But she was never deterred by what
people thought.
