 THE DECADE since the publication of the first edition of Global Security in the Twenty-First Century, the world has witnessed dramatic changes that continue to reflect the argument that it is important to understand contemporary security in a global context. We have seen a war between Russia and Ukraine, concerns about the proliferation of nuclear weapons in Iran and North Korea, continued questions related to the rise of China, and new challenges that confront America—and its relative position in the world—under the leadership of President Barack Obama. We have seen the ongoing demands of asymmetric conflict and terrorism, a global economic collapse, threats to human security—including the H1N1 and Ebola fears that gripped much of the world—and growing concerns about energy and the environment. We have also experienced extraordinary popular people’s movements for democracy in the Arab world, from Tunisia and Egypt to Bahrain, Yemen, and Libya, and the death of Osama bin Laden. In Libya, we witnessed the deployment of military power against the civilian population and a military intervention by a coalition of like-minded states, including the United States, France, Italy, and Great Britain, to secure humanitarian efforts there—only to see the country collapse into chaos, followed not long afterward by Syria. We also witnessed massive disasters due to acts of nature in the form of earthquakes in China, Haiti, New Zealand, and Japan and historic floods in Pakistan and Australia. 

For many people across the globe, we have entered a period largely defined by uncertainty and even fear, and yet we also see extraordinary reminders of the power of humanity and the potential for progress.
