The armed forces of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK, aka North Korea) celebrate two birthdays. February 8, 1948, was the date the Korean People’s Army (KPA) was founded, while April 25, 1932, is the date associated with the establishment of Kim Il-sung’s guerrilla group in Antu, northeast China, which became the Anti-Japanese People’s Guerrilla Army (aka Korean People’s Revolutionary Army, KPRA). When the KPA came into being, it consisted of personnel who learned their art from three masters: the Japanese, Chinese, and Soviet militaries, each with very different doctrines. As a result, the KPA initially found it challenging to blend these traditions into a cohesive doctrine.

To the Chinese, Korea was China’s vulnerable “back door.” Japan’s invasions of China during the 19th and 20th centuries took place via Korea, while Japan’s annexation of Korea in 1910 gave Japan a foothold on the Asian mainland. The United Nations’ involvement in what the Chinese saw as a Korean civil war alarmed the Chinese authorities as General Douglas MacArthur’s forces headed northward after the Incheon landing (September 15–25, 1950), and prompted the involvement of Chinese forces in the Korean War. The Chinese forces operating in Korea were known as the People’s Volunteer Army (PVA), created especially for the conflict by transferring complete divisions from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), honed by many years of warfare against the Japanese and recently victorious in the Chinese Civil War (1946–49).
