The Chinese forces operating in Korea were known as the People’s Volunteer Army (PVA), created especially for the conflict by transferring complete divisions from the People’s Liberation Army (PLA), honed by many years of warfare against the Japanese and recently victorious in the Chinese Civil War (1946–49).
