The first edition of “Handbook of Rehabilitation Medicine” was published in
2017, and was written with the intent of addressing rehabilitation conditions
and scenarios commonly seen in rehabilitation practice in a practical,
problem-based manner. The field of Rehabilitation Medicine, like many other
fields of medicine, has expanded rapidly over the past 7 years and hence a timely
update and curation of the handbook was deemed necessary. Two areas stand out in
particular. The first is the role of rehabilitation technology, be it the use of robotics
to augment conventional therapy or the use of wearable sensors to allow remote
monitoring of a patient’s progress. The second is rehabilitation of the ‘frail patient’
and its accompanying problems of physical deconditioning and sarcopenia. This
is of particular relevance given the rapidly ageing population in many countries. In this second edition, we have also added 2 new chapters. The first is “Sex and
sexuality in the disabled”, a subject some of readers may not be comfortable to talk
about with their patients, or even if they are willing, may not have the skillset to do
so. The second is “A holistic approach to return to driving and work after a disability”.
Depending on the severity of disability, returning back to gainful employment is
often a long and arduous journey for many patients, and a dedicated rehabilitation
team goes a long way and helping patients achieve this possibility.

We would like to acknowledge the labour of our chapter authors and contributors, without which this second edition would not have been possible. Finally, we would
also like to dedicate this handbook to a dear friend and comrade, the late Dr Adela
Tow Pei Er who was a stalwart and leading light of the spinal injury programme in
our department for many years.
