Volume 64 of the Handbook on the Physics and Chemistry of Rare Earths (Including Actinides) is dedicated to the memory of Prof. Vitalij K. Pecharsky who suddenly passed away on December 20, 2022. Prof. Pecharsky has significantly contributed to the series by coediting 30 volumes published between 2003 and 2022. Educated in crystallography, he was an acclaimed scientist, with major contributions to magnetism, particularly in magnetic cooling (magnetocaloric) rare-earth-containing materials. Vitalij is worldwide known for his codiscovery of the giant magnetocaloric effect in Gd5Si2Ge2, together with the late Prof. Karl Gschneidner Jr., a cofounder of the Handbook series. Yaroslav Mudryk, Duane D. Johnson, and Yuri Grin recollect this discovery in their dedication at the end of the Preface, along with highlighting the involvement of Vitalij in promoting rare earth research thanks to his encyclopedic knowledge of solid-state chemistry and physics and stressing his highly ethical and human attitude.
