And a ward full of soon-to-be mothers...
Midwives are there for us at some of the most challenging, empowering & defining moments of our lives. From heart-wrenching grief to the pure joy of a new-born baby, midwife Leah Hazard has seen it all.
But life on the NHS front line, working within a system at breaking point, is more extreme than you could ever imagine.
Moving & compassionate, funny & unexpected, Leah shares her experiences in this extraordinary love letter to new mothers & fellow midwives everywhere.
'The stories in Hard Pushed highlight the bravery of our midwives, & the women they care for.' CHRISTIE WATSON, author of The Language of Kindness
Author's Note:
Ours is all too often a place where excessive workloads & scant resources converge to form a perfect storm.. We support each other with wicked humour & hard-fought compassion, but in a broken system it’s not always enough..
Ultimately, Hard Pushed is a love letter to that self-same system that has nearly defeated us. The system is there for one purpose – to care – & it, too, can be healed if we heed the stories of those working within it. But this book is also a warning shot, a battle cry. It’s for the thousands of women I’ve met & for the countless others still to come.
Leah Hazard is a serving NHS midwife. Having studied @ Harvard, she left a career in TV to pursue her lifelong interest in women’s health after the birth of her 1st daughter. She soon began working as a doula, supporting women in pregnancy & attending numerous births in homes & hospitals across England.
The birth of her 2nd daughter prompted Leah to become a midwife. Since qualifying, she has worked in a variety of clinical areas within the NHS maternity services, including antenatal clinics, triage units, & labour wards.&
