Historical Dictionary Of Latvia 3rd Edition Aldis Purs Andrejs Plakans by Aldis Purs, Andrejs Plakans 9781538102206, 153810220X instant download after payment.

This is now the third edition of the Historical Dictionary of Latvia, written by Aldis Purs on the foundation of the previous work by Andrejs Plakans. Professor Plakans was born in Riga but grew up in the United States. He visited Latvia while it was under Soviet rule and again more recently since it became an independent state. During a long career as professor of history at Iowa State University, he was a prolific source of information for his students but also for the general public and participated in the activities of learned societies dealing with the region, having served as president of the Association for the Advancement of Baltic Studies (AABS), among other things. Dr. Plakans has also written numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including The Latvians: A Short History. But certainly not one of his lesser achievements were the first two historical dictionaries of Latvia, which have been of use to all who wanted to know about Latvia, including many Latvians. He is now succeeded by Aldis Purs, who began his doctoral studies at the University of Toronto just as Latvia was regaining independence in the
early 1990s. Purs taught at Vidzeme University College in Valmiera, Latvia, before returning to North America as a research scholar at the Woodrow Wilson Center for International Studies in Washington, DC. He has taught at several universities and is currently an affiliated assistant professor at the University of Washington. Purs has also served on the board of the AABS and has written numerous articles, book chapters, and books, including Baltic Facades: Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania since 1945. Purs has collaborated with Professor Plakans on previous projects, but not with the breadth and scope of a historical dictionary. The result, taken from two scholars’ work, is a formidable guide to a formidable country.
