Excavations alone do not reveal the full significance of these sites and the author includes a review of the ethnographic and ethno-historic sources which show the large variability in the use of caves, rock shelters and boulders: places for telling stories, homes for mythical beings, entrances to the underworld, and centres for ritual and 'magic'.
