The sounds of screams echoed through the halls. Smoke threatened to choke us as it wafted through the castle. The dark warlock’s men had infiltrated the palace and had succeeded in tearing it apart. Broken paintings lay strewn throughout the hallway, priceless family heirlooms shattered, soil from potted plants had been embedded in the carpet and my least favorite of all, the bodies. Bodies of maids and stewards who worked in the castle lay lifeless littered throughout the hallway. Most of their throats had been slit but others had died more brutal deaths.
“Don’t look, Farah.” Nicholas grabbed my hand as I covered my mouth. Bile rose in the back of my throat and tears burned my eyes.
“Where is my mother?” I asked as I held onto the hem of my dress, blood had already stained the bottom.
“She’s with your father, they’re in the throne room. We have been able to keep the throne room boarded off but it’s not looking too good.” I was thankful for Nicholas’ honesty but it scared me to death.
So many people had died today and if we didn’t get out of the palace, we would too.
“There she is!” Someone’s deep voice carried through the hallway,” The princess!” I turned to see where the voice had come from and my insides froze. Two men with sneers written on their faces started towards us, their faces promising death.
