40 reviewsThis is a book about people; it does not pretend to be a history of the Ottoman Empire. What I have tried to do is to show the decline of a mighty and colourful empire through the eyes and actions of the Sultans and their concubines in the harem (who at times wielded immense power) from the time of Suleiman the Magnificent to the death of a leader of a different stamp - Kamal Ataturk.
It is not so much the story of great battles as of the events leading up to them, though I have made an exception with the siege of Plevna, partly because it provides a superb example of the Turkish talent for bulldog defence, but also (to be truthful) because it is such a rattling good yarn that I could not resist it.
